This week, we are proud to introduce you to two twinning members of the Jornada Elementary School family, Maggie Rodriguez (left) and Carmela Olivas. Maggie is the finance secretary at Jornada and joined the staff full-time three years ago after working for LCPS as a substitute teacher. Carmela is the registrar and has been with Jornada for her entire career with LCPS, almost nine years!
"The best part of my day is having fun with our students," said Maggie. "I enjoy making sure they have everything they need, and if they don't, I am happy to figure it out to ensure they have a thriving, successful day."
Carmela's favorite part of the job is being part of the Jornada community and working as a team. She often reminds herself that working in public education doesn't mean "having" to do things. "We get to do these things," said Carmela. "It's an honor to be able to serve our students."
Thank you, Maggie and Carmela, for all you do to help Las Cruces Public Schools be the place where all learners thrive!

Today is the 2nd Annual LCPS Secretaries Conference at Arrowhead Park Early College High School. These busy bees are the faces we see every morning, setting the tone for the day with their hard work and dedication. Though the impact of their efforts is immeasurable, they never fail to greet staff and families with warmth and a smile.
Thank you for everything you do — your contributions make a difference every day at LCPS!

As we recognize Black History Month, we honor the incredible contributions of African Americans who have shaped our nation's history. Today, we honor the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a leader whose courage and vision changed the world.
Through his commitment to justice, equality, and nonviolence, Dr. King led the Civil Rights Movement and inspired generations to work toward a more inclusive society.
His iconic "I Have a Dream" speech remains a powerful reminder of the importance of unity and the ongoing fight for freedom and equality for all.

Happy Presidents’ Day! Today, we celebrate the legacy of our nation's leaders who have shaped the course of history. Their dedication to service reminds us of the power of education and leadership in making a positive impact.
As we honor their contributions, let's inspire our students to continue striving for excellence and becoming tomorrow's leaders.

Cariño to Wendy Shipley, Volunteer Coordinator, and Trace Burns, Volunteer Network Assistant!
In honor of Random Acts of Kindness Week, we wanted to share this Cariño from Alyssa Montoya of the Las Cruces Public Schools Bridge Program, which helps young adults with unique abilities prepare for the workforce.
Alyssa and her students have been volunteering at our Senior Centers—Benavidez, East Side, and Munson, serving lunch and making connections with our senior community. She wanted to express her sincere thanks to the City of Las Cruces Volunteer Network for providing this incredible opportunity:
"We are so grateful for the opportunities you have given us. Our students love going to work and look forward to it each and every day."
Thank you to Alyssa, the LCPS Bridge Program, and the Volunteer Network for providing this opportunity and positively impacting our community.

One more round of applause for the next deserving Standing Ovation Award winner.....Kimberly Gomez, Counselor with the Virtual Learning Academy.
This award is extra special because it comes from a former student whose life was forever changed by the unwavering support, kindness, and encouragement of their school counselor. In their nomination, they shared that during some of their toughest times, this counselor was their safe place—a constant source of reassurance and guidance. Even now, though they have moved on to a different school, they still seek out her wisdom and comfort because of the trust and care she has built. It is a testament to the incredible difference one person can make—not just in the moment, but for a lifetime. This counselor shows us that support doesn’t end when a student leaves a school, and that a listening ear and a compassionate heart can change a life.
WOW! Thank you for making such an impact, Kimberly! -LCPS Foundation

You are cordially invited to join in celebrating our selected Las Cruces Public Schools 5th grade elementary students, their parents/guardians, and their elementary music teachers for the 2025 “LC Sings! 5th Grade Honor Choir” performance. Every year about 350,000 out of hospital cardiac arrests occur, (That's more than HALF the entire population of Wyoming!) meaning that a bystander would need to step in and help! You and your family can learn hands only CPR together through your Kids Heart Challenge Page!
If you haven't' yet, sign up HERE and check it out to be a lifesaver, and share what you learned with friends and family!

As we recognize Black History Month, we honor the incredible contributions of African Americans who have shaped our nation's history. Today, we celebrate Shirley Anita St. Hill Chisholm— the first African American woman in Congress (1968) and the first woman and African American to seek the nomination for president of the United States from one of the two major political parties (1972).
This month, take the time to learn about other monumental figures like her—voices that have made a lasting impact on American history and continue to inspire us today.
